Annandale is located in Sydney’s Inner West, just 4 kilometres west of the CBD. The suburb is steeped in history and was originally an affluent area but transitioned into a working class suburb in the early part of the 20th century. Over the last couple of decades it has transitioned back to an affluent area due to its quant village atmosphere, proximity to great cafés and restaurants and easy access to the CBD, the University of Sydney and public transport. The lower section of the suburb is within short walking distance to Stanmore station while the top part has easy access to Rozelle Bay Light Rail Station. Busses also service the suburb and to the CBD via Booth Street and Parramatta Road.
Annandale is brimming with beautifully restored Victorian homes and terrace houses. There are also apartments sprinkled throughout the suburb including warehouses that have been converted into trendy apartments, particularly around the Booth Street shops. Annandale also has a small waterfront and modern townhouses have recently been constructed in that area that take in views of the Anzac and Sydney Harbour Bridges.
Annandale’s village is located on Booth Street near the intersection with Johnston Street. There are also several more restaurants and cafés on Parramatta Road as well as the Annandale Hotel. The Victoria Hotel on Collins Street is also a popular local spot. Palace Cinema in Norton Street, Leichhardt plays a mixture of mainstream as well as art-house movies and each year hosts the Italian, French and Spanish film festivals.
Local schools in Annandale include Annandale and Annandale North Public Schools as well as St Brendan’s Primary School. There are also well-regarded secondary schools in the area such as Australian Performing Arts Grammar School and St Scholastica’s College (for girls) in Glebe, Newington College (for boys) in Stanmore and The Athena School in Newtown.
