Balgowlah is located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, 9 kilometres north east of the CBD in the Manly LGA. The E35 express bus travels from Balgowlah to Manly Wharf in the morning peak hour and connects with ferry services departing for circular quay (and vice versa in the afternoon).
Detached houses make up approximately one-third of properties in Balgowlah. There are still some lovely examples Federation and Art Deco architecture, however many have been extended (not necessarily in the same style as the original house) to suit modern lifestyles or replaced with modern houses and duplexes. For even more choice, Warringah Mall is less than 10 minutes’ drive away and is currently being expanded to offer more than 340 stores in total.
Schools in Balgowlah include Manly West Public School, St Cecilia’s Primary School and Northern Beaches Secondary College (Balgowlah Boys Campus). The girls’ campus of Northern Beaches Secondary College is located in neighbouring Manly Vale.
North Harbour Reserve is dog friendly and looks out over yachts to Jilling Cove. It’s a picturesque spot for a barbeque, although it does get quite busy on Sundays in summer. It also has a half basketball court, playground, toilet facilities and is a great place for a swim as it is very sheltered. Forty Beans café is conveniently across the street if you’re craving a coffee or snack. The reserve also joins the Manly Scenic walkway, which you can take either to Manly or to the Spit Bridge. It offers stunning tranquil views of Jilling Cove and Manly Cove stretching over Sydney Harbour past the heads as you walk further around. Golfing fans are spoilt for choice with Balgowlah, Manly, Warringah and Wakehurst Golf Clubs all within short driving distance. The Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Swim Centre is also nearby and currently undergoing an expansion to offer an indoor 25m pool, children’s pool, spa pool, sauna, steam room, fitness centre and crèche in addition to the existing 25m and 50m outdoor pools.
Balgowlah is a family friendly location with easy access to the city and the beach while being relatively affordable compared to its other waterfront neighbours.
