Watsons Bay sits on northern end of the South Head peninsula and is flanked by water on three sides – the Tasman Sea to the east and Sydney Harbour to the north and west. It’s only neighbouring suburb is the exclusive Vaucluse to the south. Watsons Bay’s position allows spectacular views towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the bay on its western side and to Manly at North Head and the Pacific Ocean from The Gap (an ocean cliff on the suburbs’ western side). Watsons Bay can be reached by car, bus or alternatively the scenic ferry from either the CBD or Manly.
The historic suburb has a large number of sandstone and timber heritage buildings remaining in addition to unlisted small fisherman’s cottages. Alongside the cottages are larger 1950’s and 1960’s brick homes that were constructed following the conversion of the suburb from a fishing village to a desirable residential suburb. Contemporary modern two storey brick homes and boutique unit developments are also scattered throughout the suburb which incorporates a mere 245 houses.
Watsons Bay is home to the World famous Doyles seafood restaurant (the first of the chain, where Doyle originally sold his daily catch in 1845). Take a seat in their restaurant with some of the best views of the Sydney skyline around while enjoying top class seafood. Alternatively, they also have a takeaway shop on the wharf if you prefer to enjoy your lunch in the park. Watsons Bay Hotel is a favourite with locals with great food and wine and a beer garden to soak up the sun with another great view of the harbour. If you’re just after a coffee and light snack, the area also offers a couple of local cafes.
Nearby Vaucluse Public School caters for primary school children while older students can travel to nearby state schools in Bondi and Rose Bay. There are also several well regarded private schools in the surrounding area including Ascham, Cranbrook, Kambala, Kincoppal-Rose Bay and Scots College.
The scenic coastal walk from the wharf along South Head winds its way through the Sydney Harbour National Park and The Gap, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and is a popular Sydney tourist attraction. Alternatively a walk heading north from the wharf takes in Lady Bay and Horsby Lighthouse on South Head. Further amenities can be found at nearby Bondi Junction such as gyms and a multitude of shops.
