Why
Northern Beaches

Located just over 8km north east of Sydney’s CBD, the Northern Beaches is accessible, convenient, and a popular place to live. The Northern Beaches feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Sydney CBD due to the relaxed beachside lifestyle on offer, yet it’s easily accessible by ferry or car and is only a 30 minute bus trip from Dee Why outside peak hour.

It’s also surrounded by exquisite National Parks including Garigal and Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Parks and waterways such as Pittwater, Narrabeen Lakes and Manly Dam, all of which are less than an hour’s drive from the city.

Transport

Bus

Buses are the primary mode of public transportation on the Northern Beaches. They provide access to Manly's ferry wharf as well as the city's main train stations in Chatswood, North Sydney, and Sydney. At Pittwater Road in Brookvale, Dee Why, Mona Vale, and Manly Wharf are the primary bus interchanges.

The main B-Line bus route runs every 10 minutes from Mona Vale along Pittwater Road to the city. No need for a timetable – just hop on and hop off.

Across the suburbs of Manly, Fairlight, Balgowlah, Balgowlah Heights, Clontarf, and Seaforth, Council operates the Hop, Skip & Jump community bus service. On weekdays, four routes run, and on weekends, three routes. In the Stockland Shopping Center in Condamine Street, Balgowlah, the bus routes converge.

Ferry

The Manly Ferry is a special and unforgettable experience in addition to being a fantastic method to travel to and from the city.

The Beaches Link Tunnel, which will connect to the Warringah Freeway, span Middle Harbour, and connect to the Burnt Bridge Creek Diversion near Balgowlah, is now undergoing early construction. Between Seaforth and Frenchs Forest, the Wakehurst Parkway will be expanded to two lanes in each direction.

Shops and Restaurants in Northern Beaches

As they say, food brings people together. What better way to enjoy good food with good friends is to have it by the Wharfside!

Manly Wharf

Manly's hottest dining district is not far to be found; simply get off the ferry at Circular Quay and you are practically there. New locations for well-known eateries have opened up at Manly Wharf, which is excellent news if you're searching for Japanese food that's on-trend (try Saké Restaurant & Bar's sashimi tacos and popcorn shrimp with yuzu and mayonnaise). For example, the family-friendly pizza joint Fratelli Fresh has Neapolitan slices and wild mushroom gnocchi, while El Camino Cantina serves cheeseburger tacos and "Cadillac" margaritas that have Grand Marnier added. Also Wharfside is Queen Chow, which offers its own interpretation of Chinese cuisine. The prawn toast is given an executive-level makeover by the opulent addition of caviar.

Avalon

Tacos and burritos are on the menu at Alma, a restaurant in Avalon, just south of Palm Beach, whose culinary influence is from abroad. While the escabeche gets its flavour from marinated Clarence River octopus and the zingy aguachile is created with Australian prawns, the restaurant nevertheless proudly promotes local fish. The casual ambiance of the restaurant is ideal for the light fare, but if you want to eat even closer to the waves of Avalon, Beach House is situated right on the beach and just a few steps from the sand.

Palm Beach

Although Barrenjoey House, a Palm Beach favourite located an hour north of the city centre, just celebrated its 100th birthday, it hasn't lost any of its charm. Even though the building has a long history—it was the first in the neighbourhood to have a telephone, and the military enjoyed gathering here during World War II—a 2018 renovation meticulously upgraded the structure while maintaining the venue's unique flavour. It appears lighter and brighter, and the menu's emphasis on seafood still holds true. Imagine lobster ravioli, Fraser Isle crab toast, and a light variation on prawn cocktail for examples of traditional meals that are still in style. Pip and Andrew Goldsmith, the duo responsible for The Boathouse Palm Beach's phenomenal success, renovated Barrenjoey House.

Schools and Educational Facilities in Northern Beaches

Several schools on the Northern Beaches consistently rank highly in NSW such as Northern Beaches Secondary College in North Curl Curl and St Luke’s Grammar School in Dee Why.

The Northern Beaches Campus of The Northern Sydney Institute (part of TAFE NSW) provides courses in HSC and business as well as practical subjects such as automotive mechanics and building. Northern Beaches Community College in Narrabeen is not for profit and also runs a variety of courses.

Having a selection of schools in the area adds to the value of property for sale in the Northern Beaches and makes it a smart move for investors and popular with those who have families.
